46. HANDWRITING
Here is another use for the principle suggested by Mr. Parrish. You can, by the use of this method, identify the writing done by each of three different people.
Ask the first spectator to write the numbers 1, 2, 3 in a column on the left side of the slate. Then tell him to write down the name of his favorite car next to any one of the three numbers.
Take the slate from him and give it to the second spectator. As you do, run the right forefinger along the writing side of the slate. This will create a streak or smudge in the first spectator’s writing.
Tell the second spectator to write down the name of his favorite car in one of the remaining spaces. After he’s done this, take the slate from him and hand it to a third spectator. Of course you must make it obvious that you never see the writing.
As you hand the slate to the third spectator, the right forefinger is again run down the writing side of the slate, but the finger is extended a little farther over.
After the third spectator has jotted down the name of his favorite car, he gives you the slate. In looking over the writing, you will find one name has two streaks or chalk smudges in it. This is the car written by the first spectator.
Another name on the slate has one smudge. This is the car chosen by the second spectator. The name that has no smudge is the car chosen by the third spectator.
This is an excellent mental routine. In handling the slate, you should pretend to study the style used by each writer to jot down his favorite car. Then, pretending that you are getting the impression by handwriting analysis, you proceed to guess which sort of man would choose which car.
